Doggone East is East and Beefburger West is West

FMT - Dog meat sold at stall in Sibu, man arrested (extracts):

A raid by police at a slaughterhouse in Sibu, Sarawak discovered the gruesome sight of dog meat, which was also being sold at a stall in the same location.

Police arrested a 54-year-old man after a raid, following allegations that he sold dog meat at his food stall, which is located on the ground floor of a row of wooden houses, Star reported. [...]

According to Sibu OCPD Asst Comm Saiful Bahari Abdullah, the man is being detained to assist in investigations under Section 428 of the Penal Code for causing mischief by killing or maiming any animal.

Sibu Central Market

FYI, Section 428 of Malaysian Penal Code deals with Mischief by killing or maiming cattle, etc., or any animal of the value of twenty-five ringgit.

It says: Whoever commits mischief by killing, poisoning, maiming, or rendering useless, an elephant, camel, horse, mule, buffalo, bull, cow or ox, whatever may be the value thereof, or any other animal of the value of twenty-five ringgit or upwards, shall be punished with imprisonment for a term which may extend to five years or with fine or with both.

In fact, much as Dog Lovers might be horrified, there is NO law in Malaysia against selling dog meat or eating dogs.

Section 428 of the Penal Code only lists elephant, camel, horse, mule, buffalo, bull, cow or ox, but not dog, wakakaka.

The only way the police can use Section 428 is its statement on 'other animals' but only if they can prove the Sibu dog-meat seller killed or butchered a dog worth more than RM25, and with the intent to cause 'mischief' (torture or abuse the dog, or even without the hygienic certification of the Veterinary Department, etc), wakakaka.

I doubt they can do both, but wait, in Malaysia the police can and has done many impossible things, wakakaka.

But then his defence lawyer will come swinging and ask: What about people killing camels, cattle (buffalo, bull, cow, ox), goats and sheep (all worth RM25 & above) especially Muslims slaughtering cattle and camels on Korban Day, and without Veterinary Department presence or approval?

I must also point out the FMT reporter's bias in describing the sight of dog meat as 'gruesome'.

That's bullshit because if he or she was not told it was dog meat, he or she would have thought it was pork, mutton or beef.

all above are dog meat  - are they 'gruesome'?

Thus if dog meat was perceived as 'gruesome', then pork, mutton or beef would also be 'gruesome'.

The FMT reporter must be either a Dog Lover or someone influenced by Western attitude towards dogs. Wait, he or she might be a vegetarian, wakakaka.

from the NY Times (10 July 2017):

NEW DELHI — Coming from some other debt-ridden airline, it might have been shrugged off as just another service cutback. But not this time: When Air India announced on Monday that coach passengers on its domestic flights would now be offered only vegetarian meals, the move provoked an uproar on social media.

G. P. Rao, a spokesman for the government-owned airline, said the change was made a week ago strictly to reduce waste and cut costs. But what people eat can be a sectarian flash point in India, especially since Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party took power.

Many members of the Hindu majority are vegetarians, while the country’s Muslims and some other minorities eat meat. So the airline’s action was seen by many as discriminatory and part of a wave of religious nationalism sweeping the country.“Only veg food on Air India,” Madhu Menon, a Bangalore-based chef and food writer, wrote on Twitter. “Next, flight attendants to speak only Hindi. After that, stand for national anthem before flight take-off.”

Malaysian Dog Lovers and most Westerners would of course be appalled if not shocked that some Malaysians eat dog meat, just as my late Mum was shocked by the amount of beef sold and eaten in Australia.

In Malaysia she knew beef was sold but only in limited quantities to Muslims and 'Ah-Mor' (Mat Salleh, orang putih), and which had already troubled her peace of mind.

See also my Kongsamkok post The day I first saw my mum cry.

But when she was in Oz holidaying with me, she was horrified by the boundless beef butcheries around where I live, and needless to say, glared fiercely at me for inviting her to such a 'sinful' place, wakakaka.

Incidentally, I used the word 'sinful' just to convey the impression of horror my mother had, because there is no such thing as 'sin' in Buddhism but rather 'ignorance' (as in 'ignorance' to Truth).

Kuanyin

Mum was a devotee of the Pure Land Buddhism and in particular of the Bodhisattva Kuanyin (or Avalokitesvara) whose disciples, adherents or worshippers regard the act of eating an animal which ploughs the rice field to feed them as a serious 'not on' ingratitude, in the same horrid perception that Muslims regard the eating of pork.

The difference in emotion is that Pure Land Buddhists do not eat beef because of gratitude to cattle for helping plough rice-fields to feed them, while Muslims regard pigs as 'dirty'.

But back to dogs and their meat, there is undeniably a clash of civilisation between the Far East and the West. Many Chinese, Koreans and Vietnamese consider dog meat as another form of meat, while Westerners would be horrified.

Conversely, Westerners consider beef as another form of meat, while Hindu Indians and Chinese Mahayana Buddhists would be horrified at such vile cruelty to an animal which helps feed them.

In fact, in most states in India, it is illegal to sell beef. The Madras High Court has recently just held in abeyance a BJP government law to outlaw the sales of beef which will have adversely affected Indian Muslims. Kerala and Bengal also join Tamilnadu in opposing PM Modi's beef ban. Mind, my late Mum, if still alive, would have applauded PM Modi, wakakaka.

In Asia, only Taiwan has made sales and consumption of dog meat illegal. But China holds a lychee-dog meat festival in Yulin, Guangxi in Summer annually, much to the horror of Westerners and Dog Lovers. Koreans too have their own doggy whatever, wakakaka.

But many of the meats that Westerners eat are repugnant to Far East Asians and Hindu Indians, like beef, (and to Japanese) mutton, horse meat including their downstream products such as burgers, sausages, patties, etc.

You just can't please everyone unless the World goes vegetarian. Go Modi go, wakakaka!

  1. The Dog meat seller could have been charged under any number of laws, provided there is a will among the authorities to bring him to face the law.

He could be charged under the Food Act 1983, if he had not openly labelled that it is dog meat, or pretended it was beef, chicken or mutton. Either that or declare that it is not for human consumption - i.e. it is legal to sell dog meat not for human consumption.

In addition, he could be charged under various Local Government by-laws (depending on local regulation)requiring meat sold for public consumption must be slaughtered and processed in a registered licensed establishment.
I bet the Dog wasn't slaughtered in in any "licensed establishment"

  2. Horse meat is actually not bad tasting.

However, as the EU and UK horsemeat scandal in 2013 showed, there are a number of risks in the distribution of horsemeat.

Horsemeat for human consumption has a fraction of the commercial value of Beef , Chicken or Pork.

So if it is sold without proper labelling, or secretly blended with other meat e.g. in minced meat or burgers it is a form of Commercial Fraud.

Also , because horsemeat is often slaughtered and processed in secret and outside of proper channels, or supposedly slaughtered for non-human consumption, whether it meets minimum hygiene standards for human consumption can be doubtful.

    1. Re meat, I have partaken of pork including wild boars (naturally, wakakaka), beef (cows, buffaloes, oxen), mutton-lamb (lambs, sheep, goats), venison (many types of deer including pelandok), horse meat, kangaroo meat, emu meat (but it's more of a fowl rather than animal), cats, musang (civet cats), snakes, flying foxes (dangerous because of nipah virus, don't eat this anymore), but I haven't tried dog, camel, bear.
