Paki-Quake Death Toll Passed 2,000

Utter devastation in Northern Pakistan and parts of Indian Kashmir!

Pakistan suffered more than 550 dead in its North West Frontier Province alone, with the toll expected to rise.

250 people died in Muzaffarabad in Pakistani Kashmir. 50 per cent of the buildings in the town had been destroyed or damaged. Several villages in Kashmir had been totally wiped out.

Meanwhile in the Indian part of Kashmir, about 200 have died with 300 injured. In fact some of those who perished were soldiers caught by their caved-in positions along the Line of Control.

India has offered assistance and support to Pakistan despite her own disaster.

Islamabad itself was not spared with multi-storey buildings collapsing. Rescuers had to use their bare hands to claw through rubble to reach the victims trapped under huge stone slabs.

An Egyptian diplomat and 2 Japanese perished as well.
